Before this project, I had no exposure to blogging and had no desire to blog. I have only heard about them through websites and in movies. They seem to be interesting if they're the right ones for me. I wouldn't normally read/create ones regarding this topic but I learned new things, so it wasn't all bad.
A major drawback from blogging is that you have a lot of pressure to make your blog interesting, that is if you want it to be popular. You have to stay up to date with it so it is also very time consuming. One of our assignments was to reply to all of our posts, granted I only had two, I imagine if I had my own blog I would have to respond to all of my posts which if popular could be hundreds.
Another drawback is that it is hard to forget about this at times because its not a physical location in front of you, so if you don't have time to go on the computer one day, you could miss out on important news, or annoy your followers.
An important drawback for me was that I wasn't fully interested in this Linus guy, and when I read more about him, though he is a genius, he seemed like an arrogant ass. I read an article about him telling people in the workplace that he wasn't going to change the way he spoke to them, which was very condescending and vulgar. He then engaged in a written argument with a fellow worker about his language and he tried to turn it around on her. So with this being said, I learned a lot about Torvalds, but I don't like him. I would like to create a blog about something I like, maybe computer technology in general, not who created them.
The last drawback I can think of is that there is a high need for good time management involved in blogging. It took me a lot longer to do this assignment then I thought it would. I had "writers block" as you would call it and would find myself listening to music trying to come up with something to say. I am now debating creating my own blog, on a different subject for my leisure. It seems like a fun way to attract others with the same interests and to keep a kind of journal to document your thoughts.
Overall I would say this project was better than I thought. I learned a lot about Linux and Linus Torvalds that I would have never know before. I found myself quizzing friends and family regarding his existence.
